Hymn: Blest be the tie that binds
1
Blest be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship our kindred minds Is like to that above. 2 Before our Father's throne, We pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one — Our comforts and our cares. 3 We share our mutual woes; Our mutual burdens bear; And often for each other flows The sympathizing tear. 4 When we asunder part, It gives us inward pain; But we shall still be joined in heart, And hope to meet again. 5 From sorrow, toil, and pain, And sin we shall be free; And perfect love and friendship reign Through all eternity. |
The Humility of the Savior and a steadfast example |
a. The Serving as a slave and the feet washing of each other |
The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.
Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
b. A Perfect example and a faithful practice |
If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.
Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
c. The accomplishment of prophecies and the fulfillment of God's will |
Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.
The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you keep on biting and devouring one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.
12 | When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. |
13 | "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. |
14 | Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. |
15 | I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. |
16 | Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. |
17 | Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. |
18 | "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: "He who shared my bread has turned[a] against me. |
19 | "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. |
